What is PageRank?

If you go all the way back to the beginning of search engines, the first version of Google’s ranking system was called PageRank. It determined how many quality links point back to your site. The Google algorithm would essentially say: if everyone is linking to your content and website, this page must be pretty important. Then Google shows these top ranking websites higher in the results. Keep in mind that a high PageRank will only get you so far. I’ll cover ways to increase the E-E-A-T qualities within content throughout today’s post. Just keep this in mind it plays a role in attracting backlinks. This isn’t to say Google is looking for only one kind of content when determining E-E-A-T. Some topics require greater depth and consideration to avoid potentially misleading a website visitor.

What are Google YMYL Guidelines?

YMYL (Your Money Your Life) guidelines prioritize content about sensitive subjects such as medical and financial advice, nutrition information, or any content that has the potential to negatively affect a website visitor’s health, wellness, happiness, finances, safety or security if it’s false, incorrect, misleading or is otherwise questionable. To make things simple, for Google to take those YMYL subjects seriously, sites publishing content on them need an expert writer with verified experience to create those pieces and build trust. One example of a platform that prioritizes quality content when handling sensitive information such as medical and legal content is Wikipedia. But for websites not operating at the scale of a behemoth like Wikipedia, is it even feasible for them to publish YMYL topics?

Let’s say you’re the person creating and sharing the content, consider getting it syndicated with backlinks that would only add to those YMYL content pages perceived expertise imagine getting your health content linked from places like WebMD or Mayo Clinic, or even better if your recipe for diabetic meals received a backlink from a healthcare website. Transparency

Clearly identify how data is sourced when incorporating things like research reports. Another method is highlighting expertise or adding in unique tips or thought provoking details that competitors aren’t already addressing. When thinking about relevant content, I find it helpful to put things in terms of that user intent with a clear focus how can those entrepreneurs or businesses trying to reach users performing these search terms ensure each of their blog articles aligns perfectly to give those audiences what they came for? Does that searcher clicking on a quality link and navigating to an irrelevant or questionable article gain much from the link?

Fresh Content

It’s one thing to get tons of high-quality backlinks. It’s another if the visitor discovering content organically through search terms, a link placement from social media (where high quality backlinks abound.), or even directly from one of your pages through their web searches or social sharing finds old, dated content. They will probably leave immediately. To give you a practical example for those websites operating in, say, education by offering degrees, Google will give more priority to up-to-date tuition pricing and financial information that answers searcher queries compared to stale content created for its quality link and shared socially a few years ago when these education website pieces came out. I recommend that webmasters, marketers, business owners, or anyone building out high authority content perform several levels of content quality checks before it’s posted. The Skyscraper Technique Explained

It might be easier to create those links through questionable means such as private blog networks, but that isn’t what Google is looking to promote (they may end up penalizing your site). Back in 2015, Brian Dean over at Backlinko devised a three-step process for attracting those high-quality links organically that he calls the “Skyscraper Technique” This backlinking tactic involves reverse-engineering an existing topic or blog post that’s already got a strong link profile. Why? Because those linking website visitors have already given their endorsements.

Step #1. Competitor Backlink Research and Gap Analysis

The first step of the process is identifying those high-quality pages in your industry already being linked. Choose one, let’s say a top ranking resource or guide with lots of quality backlinks from external pages your article’s eventual link will fall in a similar bucket. From there you’re going to identify elements you can expand on or missing content or insights you can improve with a more complete article you’ll find some really valuable nuggets when analyzing these from an SEO standpoint (in essence, this is like getting those top ranking competitors to create those pages and high authority links for your efforts, making them perfect backlinks). Let’s go with a medical blog topic and say that website owner creating content to help visitors dealing with diabetic recipes used Backlinko’s technique, what would this gap analysis research look like?

Use one of several SEO tools such as Semrush, Ahrefs or Majestic (but Semrush is my preferred choice for this strategy). First enter your competitor’s URL and take a look at things like total keywords and overall search ranking performance.

The goal here is identifying strong-performing posts and their best ranking keywords to see if a piece can be replicated in greater depth with stronger, fresher information. We can identify opportunities this competitor hasn’t tapped into yet this is also known as content gap analysis and the results you gather from this will help drive those high authority results.

The Backlinko analysis found the most successful topics based on what sites are liking to them:

* Long-Form Articles
* Visual Content Like Infographics and Images
* Why Posts
* What Posts
* How To Posts
* Expert Roundups and Case Studies
* Updated Lists

By understanding this process, we’re setting up our competitor for failure as we work on creating those better content marketing link building resources. You’ll end up with several ideas to expand upon those already performing articles and boost your ranking potential through quality.

Step #2. Expand on Existing Content (Don’t Copy.)

The second step is expanding upon those pre-existing blog topics, articles or content with added value, incorporating techniques from my E-E-A-T guidelines to build your overall website up. For instance if everyone is publishing articles for SEO on things such as financial calculators without actually making them user-friendly, you could use that as the premise of your content creation take one idea for content that already performs well. Maybe everyone is creating “Beginner Guides” when users conducting their searches every day need a full-scale in-depth expert guide with backlinks. If a website visitor finds a topic such as digital marketing to be highly nuanced or too generalized in existing content pieces, creating and sharing those pieces with links means creating them with specificity imagine offering highly nuanced or specific guidance like “digital marketing for healthcare.” Even those advanced searches with less demand such as, “content marketing link building for construction companies” require content writers to really zero-in to get an even higher-caliber resource with links, giving you better ranking than your competitor who simply publishes the less specialized version of the page. We’ve now addressed that issue of attracting the human visitors searching, but how can we cater even more to the crawler reviewing a website?

You’ve heard me talk about the “Moz Top 10”, where their experts publish emails every so often (hopefully on your content). They do a ton of research for their resources, showing us just how to approach authentic content, highlighting these elements:

* Include data and charts, as research reveals this process enhances results. Backlinko studied what elements sites linked to the most by performing competitor analysis of those pieces with high authority content for link-building: Backlinko looked at over 1 million search results to see if links were still relevant. They found, The #1 result in Google for any given keyword has an average of 3.8x more backlinks than positions #2-#10. By ensuring your own content strategy adheres to quality content that has valuable statistics or supportive research, your position on the pages could be quite amazing as you get those rankings.

* Conduct and include surveys within your post (the more data the better.). For those marketing experts thinking that’s an awesome concept but who feel it’s unrealistic, think of it this way: is it truly impossible to reach, say, students for higher education sites looking to provide and link that content about student satisfaction, especially if it was done in collaboration with those universities that are providing that knowledge as those sites are already known for great ranking results?

* Cite expert quotes to show you’ve got quality connections (even linking those people). What many webmasters forget about when they work with SEO content and building their backlink strategy for results is showing off those quality, expert-backed connections with sites who can provide a top ranking. Why write another content article without tapping into influencers such as Gary Vaynerchuk who is already well-respected as those experts’ websites typically link other content? Even finding industry thought leaders to interview as your resources would improve a webpage or post, and give them a high rank.

I always say, look at experts as assets that will increase a web page’s overall effectiveness. Take time to think it over carefully, what could a business truly offer with a combination of expertise and connections? Keep those YMYL topics and guidelines in mind while ensuring content hits the principles from those helpful content criteria.

Step #3. Outreach and Content Promotion

Now it’s time to take your content to the next level and, for me, this is where things get really fun. First, publish your page. From there, promote the piece I recommend using those social media networks, getting that content out to social media for a viral post, including your target keywords in updates (but write them as questions that really address audience intent for higher ranking content and social sharing). This will not only attract website visitors (whose organic reach through social networks for any kind of page or article could really mean huge amounts of engagement from real people.), but Googlebots do index a large volume of those social media accounts.

As awareness of your brand grows, so does the likelihood of receiving backlinks from various sources, including blogs, news sites, and forums that cater to your industry or niche. These backlinks, earned organically through the increasing visibility of your content, not only drive traffic but also contribute significantly to your website’s authority and ranking on those results pages. In essence, content visibility, fostered by strategic social sharing and other social media tactics for promotion and amplifying your posts, indirectly catalyzes the growth of quality links. What you end up with through those methods such as using social for sharing with links is a win-win for Google (they trust and index your site’s content even more.), users and searchers (they easily find high-quality content and engage with you.), and for those entrepreneurs and website creators working on promoting it and for those marketers and entrepreneurs seeking higher ranking articles and pages to post.

CoSchedule found some really eye-opening data in 2018 with this in mind, An experiment by CoSchedule found that sharing the same piece several times on social media drove 192% more click-throughs. If your efforts and content pieces didn’t already resonate on those sites for that social sharing content with links, you could always use tactics like Twitter’s Tailored Audience platform. How does this content feature make your posts into quality magnets? Well, take any one article that’s already been shared to export lists from tools such as BuzzSumo (the paid or Pro version does require an additional investment for access, although the price will vary by your membership needs), where social shares and profiles for high ranking sites are readily available to build an engaged user base. From there you can take those usernames from accounts sharing content such as top ranking pages, infographics and posts to build ads, this will amplify your social posts to get you an even better page, making this perfect for content pieces about topics such as travel where shares abound (meaning even better authority content) for pages with social shares from those networks.

Leverage Your Network with Links

I’m always surprised at how many marketing experts completely forget about a key resource, their contacts. When you promote a new blog post (if, for instance, you had an amazing SEO article, guide, tutorial, data or research driven infographic or any quality link content with high authority), why not ask those already proven industry connections (their own content could include things that are linking you) who operate sites with high authority or strong social reach for those organic shares that are effective, making those sites look quite better for your outreach efforts. Backlinko looked at these tactics, suggesting one major element when it comes to success is reaching out again, One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in my years doing content promotion and link building is that the easiest way to increase your success rate by 30% is to reach out to another person if your first target doesn’t respond. The value here for content with backlinks means more visibility on that search page (and the numbers show you the reason why.), in turn these connections bring higher ranking articles.

Don’t Neglect the Humble Roundup for Backlink Growth

Look back at your competitor research using the Semrush Backlinks Analytics Tool. One of several backlink-finding methods it uses is indexing sites. This Semrush indexer identifies websites or individuals who often create high ranking lists of backlinks and share them with those users conducting a search for an ultimate guide to, and more commonly you’ll see pages such as Best SEO tips of 2024 with its accompanying backlinks (keep in mind those links might go stale over time, particularly after those initial shares), even social shares with backlinks can come from those websites to give them greater rank. When your new, high-quality content article (particularly guides that attract social reach.) has been published, reach out with personalized emails and ask those content aggregators nicely to include your site, or if it’s something that’s just come out you could make a mention in replies (this only applies if those websites use platforms like an email or comment thread for submission), make your efforts for these methods count by targeting those content marketers running quality resource pages that can handle additional backlinks from any quality link piece. They make the perfect website owners.

I find it useful to keep tabs on roundup dates and think ahead so outreach emails can be timed appropriately to give my high-value posts the best chance. From your own website’s marketing, identify topics like content marketing link building, particularly content-marketing-link-building guides and look back over recent roundup schedules to estimate when new versions with those coveted links will publish.

Don’t limit yourself to these public roundup websites or posts with links, though. As a seasoned expert, it really irks me to see businesses struggling to see value from links. So let’s set them on the path to success with a website they truly own and manage where high authority content and backlink creation result in top rankings from high-quality linking. Think of the following process from Google’s perspective: what could those sites wanting quality content do with their backlinks to increase both trustworthiness, authority and ultimately achieve better rank. Instead of constantly going out on those pages that aren’t their own to get backlinks that have potential issues and a lower quality content structure, those content pieces with links will start driving results when you take the effort inward. To accomplish this strategy for quality backlinks for greater success, incorporate techniques that create value, improve relevance and get you better SEO results for your entire website’s content pages these will work together to earn an even higher page ranking. Ahrefs did an amazing job revealing exactly how links affect sites in their 2018 article, finding “The average top-ranked page also has links from 5-8 different websites”. Use those internal articles to connect even more resources on sites that you’ve personally made.

  1. Create and Publish “Mega Guides”. It could be about a top-level category like law firms (for instance for a lawyer building links for a law website) that incorporate several key subtopic guides in depth such as “Family Law” (and, yes, it could even be a basic step-by-step article for the topic.), “Criminal Law”, “Insurance Law”, or maybe you cover one topic but add subcategories or more specific subtopic resources to make it better than anything else out there to make a higher ranking.
  2. Link Internally To Those Guides. Imagine building a law website “mega guide” called “A Guide to Understanding the Different Kinds of Legal Needs to attract those link-hungry legal sites looking for more, or even for those Googlebots who index these high quality articles. Make those internal links count incorporate text within your legal websites content for those pages about family law that say, “A Step-by-Step Breakdown to Filing a Divorce” and do the same for your law site’s resource that addresses filing an insurance claim, incorporating text that reads, “An Ultimate Guide To Insurance Law for Beginners.” For these types of strategies that include topics like divorce, think about those sensitive elements I mentioned before. Since family law touches topics with major potential consequences and nuances such as family finances and kids’ safety if this legal information is wrong or incomplete, the overall quality matters. For these types of strategies for SEO, ensure they also adhere to YMYL standards for an even higher-caliber article. Those quality internal links and your site content will only be more trustworthy as those legal pages attract those link hungry sites who help your site overall to achieve higher rankings and results. The benefit here to webmasters and businesses taking this approach, whether legal sites, accounting services or sites selling diabetic recipes for those customers looking for “easy” information is giving them one spot to go, with more organic shares from real website visitors conducting searches every day and the bonus of improving content SEO organically with trusted sites for an ever higher-ranking.

Let’s say a high-authority travel site specializing in “South American Adventure Travel” used the process above as part of their digital strategy and overall marketing. Instead of solely creating quality, optimized posts, articles and guides targeting broad, competitive keywords for its link-building (think along the lines of “things to see in South America” or “best South American restaurants” ), the webmasters decided to create in-depth subtopics covering things like “budget hotels in Colombia”. What better way to take their already link-rich “Colombia Travel Tips” ultimate guide up a notch (giving that webpage and their site an even better ranking as it answers users conducting advanced or even nuanced searches), then incorporate internal linking in the content body by stating “Where To Stay On Your Bogota Tour” and linking that “budget hotel” blog article, to drive more visibility for less popular, more advanced topics to both website visitors and Google. Just one benefit of the approach above is demonstrating that those website creators are giving visitors more options than a simple, quick and often unsatisfactory or generic article.

Email Outreach Tactics

A tactic I use often that creates those high-value opportunities is identifying sites who routinely publish quality content similar to mine and have the traffic to reflect that for those coveted organic clicks (more views mean a better page), these types of pages tend to be popular in high-volume niches with highly active sites “travel websites” or “fashion blogs”, or even, “legal resource guides” can fall into this bucket. You could simply go through each of these on the SERPs to start identifying opportunities.
